Frequently Asked Questions
What is Palliative Care?
Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness. This type of care is focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of the illness. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family.
What symptoms do you treat?
Palliative care teams focus on quality of life. They treat people suffering from the symptoms and stress of serious illnesses such as cancer, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), kidney disease, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and many more.
What is the goal of treatments?
When we know the cause of an illness, the goal of palliative care is to relieve suffering and provide the best possible quality of life for patients and their families. Symptoms may include pain, depression, shortness of breath, fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, and anxiety. The team will help you gain the strength to carry on with daily life. In short, palliative care will help improve your quality of life.
Isn't that hospice care?
Not at all! The goal of Palliative Care is to treat your symptoms when we know the cause. These symptoms can sometimes be lifelong so we strive to manage them as best and safely as we can, while your other doctors also continue to treat you, so you can live with a great quality of life.
Do you offer telehealth?
We are able to offer telehealth depending on state and federal laws. Generally once we get to know you and you are otherwise doing well on your medication regimen, we can begin to offer telehealth at our discretion.
I have chronic back pain, can you help?
Absolutely! We of course want to understand the reason for your chronic pain and treatment programs you have tried in the past. We help coordinate among many different fields to make sure you get the absolute best care possible. This will include referrals to Interventional Pain Management, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Physical Therapy, and more!
